I have recently started acquiring a collection of maternity gowns for my clients to use during their sessions. I’m starting out small, with just a few gowns available at the moment, but I will be gradually adding more to my collection to ensure I end up with a wide variety of colors, sizes, and styles.
Use of the studio’s maternity gowns is a perk to scheduling your maternity session with Beth Johnson Photography, and is included complimentary with your maternity session.
The styles I currently have available are:
Aqua lace mermaid style gown: Strapless sweetheart neckline lace dress. This material is very stretchy and fits a variety of sizes, from at least 6-16. The dress can be pinned in back to fit smaller sizes as well. The dress is pinned in the back for a better fit; it doesn’t show in the photos.
Champagne long sleeved open front gown: This material is very stretchy and fits a variety of sizes, from at least 6-16. The dress can be pinned in back to fit smaller sizes as well. This style is probably the most versatile. The flower tie under the bust can be removed like in the right photo. This dress can be worn open to show the belly (right) or closed for more coverage (left).
Plum long sleeved open front gown: This dress has the same top and material as the champagne dress pictured above, but does not have a slit in the front. It will fit sizes 6-16. Photos coming soon!
Peacock blue long sleeved open front gown: This gown is almost identical to the champagne dress above, but in peacock blue with short sleeves. It will fit sizes 22+ but can also be pinned in the back to fit smaller. Photos coming soon! Here is a link to the dress from the retailer: https://www.sewtrendyaccessories.com/products/colette-gown
Blush lace mermaid style gown: Strapless lace dress. This material is very stretchy and fits a variety of sizes, from at least 6-16. The dress can be pinned in back to fit smaller sizes as well.
Pale blue strapless split front gown with long train: Sheer chiffon dress with yards of material to make a stunning train. This material is stretchy and fits a variety of sizes, from at least 6-16. The dress can be pinned in back to fit smaller sizes as well.
Plum lace mermaid style gown: Strapless lace dress. This material is very stretchy and fits a variety of sizes, from at least 6-16. The dress can be pinned in back to fit smaller sizes as well.
Beige lace gown: Solid tube top style bodice with an open lacy gown. The dress is stretchy and fits a wide variety of sizes, from at least size 6-16. All dresses can be clamped in the back to accommodate smaller sizes as well.
Teal Infinity Dress – This gown is stretchy and has an infinity style top, meaning it can be tied in all sorts of ways to change the look of the gown. It also will fit a wide variety of sizes, though it’s slightly less stretchy than the two dresses above.
Other new dresses that haven’t been photographed yet:
All photos below are stock photos and will be updated with my photos once the dresses are used for sessions.
- Pink top and tutu set: This set has a stretchy top that fits a wide range of bra sizes, and can be adjusted to fit smaller if necessary. The tutu skirt has an elastic waist that will also accommodate a variety of sizes. The skirt isn’t super long, so it would fit best for shorter mamas.
- White lace robe: This pretty maternity robe has gorgeous lace edging. It buttons at the bust and is open in front to show off your growing belly. The floral crown pictured is also available to borrow for sessions. I have crown available in white, cream, and pink.
- This gown just arrived at the studio and I haven’t had an opportunity to use it with a client yet, so the stock photo is shown below. The dress is made out of sheer lace, and while I haven’t used it personally, I have seen it used by other photographer friends, and the dress is stunning in photos.
Want to purchase your own gown for your session instead of using one of mine? There are two stores online that sell amazing maternity gowns, and I highly recommend them if you want something quality made that will photograph beautifully. The quality is incredible and they come in just about every color and style imaginable.
Sew Trendy Accessories: The link takes you to their ready to ship section for pre-made dresses, but if you order early enough to have your gown custom made, the style options are endless, and the dresses are gorgeous.
The Art of Pregnancy and Newborn: These gowns are beautiful as well, and I believe all of their dresses are ready to ship.
Pink Blush Maternity: This site has gowns as well as more casual maxi dresses. There are some really pretty solid colors and simple colorblocked maxi dresses that would look stunning in photos.
I love the look of maternity gowns, but I know they aren’t for everyone. If you are looking for something more modest than the coverage maternity gowns offer, I recommend a maxi dress in a solid color. Maxi dresses are a flattering style that looks great on just about every woman, and because maxi dresses often have empire waists, even non maternity styles will often work, especially if you size up. I’ve found beautiful ones at places like Old Navy, Rue 21, H&M, and Kohls, often for as little as $30.
